When you type “best marketing strategies 2024” into Google, an algorithm matches your keywords against a pre-indexed database of websites. When you type that exact same string into ChatGPT or Claude, the model attempts to predict the most statistically probable next word based on its training data.

The result is usually a generic, unhelpful list.

The Difference Between Retrieval and Generation

Search engines retrieve existing information. LLMs generate net-new text based on patterns.

If you want a model to be useful, you have to stop treating the text box like a search bar. You need to treat it like a blank document that requires immediate, heavy context.
